Proceedings of the Seventh Workshop on Culturally-Aware Tutoring Systems (CATS2024)

Abstract

The International Workshop on Culturally-Aware Tutoring Systems (CATS) had been held 6 times to date, in conjunction with ITS and AIED conferences: ITS2008, AIED2009, ITS2010, AIED2013, ITS2014, and AIED2015. It has grown in popularity since its first edition, a trend reflected by an increasing number of submissions, a steady participation of researchers, and the enthusiasm we faced when assembling our program committee for the 2024 edition. This shows that many researchers in the AIED community clearly see the relevance of this workshop and the importance of having an event to discuss culture and AIED in a transversal way. For many colleagues, it is indeed becoming increasingly crucial to understand and integrate diverse cultural perspectives to ensure that developments, technologies and methods arising from AIED research are inclusive, equitable and globally relevant. CATS2024 has been designed as a half day hybrid event to help participants (especially newcomers) develop a richer, and more nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities of taking culture into account in AIED. With its different sessions with complementary formats and objectives, this event will help AIED researchers deepen their knowledge and understanding of existing CATS initiatives and perspectives. We hope that new ideas will be sparked by these engaging discussions, and that international collaborations will emerge from this event. We would like to thank the various people who made this new edition of the workshop possible, first and foremost the authors of the 7 selected papers, which you will find in the rest of these proceedings. We would also like to thank the members of the program committee, whose comments helped to improve the various contributions. We also thank the AIED2024 workshop chairs, Cristian Cechinel and Carrie Demmans Epp, the AIED2024 local organizing chairs, Rafael Ferreira Mello and Taciana Pontual, and the student and technical volunteers who greatly facilitated the event. Finally, we would like to thank all the participants: with 94 registered attendees, among which over 50 in-person participants, CATS2024 was the most popular edition of our event series.
