General Introduction
Résumé
Is it possible to define what was acceptable (or otherwise) in the 16th century? What views could freely be bandied around? We are minded to follow in the footsteps of Jean-Pierre Cavaillé and avoid asserting that religious unbelief was unthinkable in Rabelais’ France (as, say in the textbook case of Lucien Febvre’s 1942 work).
