Nonlinear interaction of vortices to generated deep sub-wavelength acoustical vortex beams

Résumé

Using the nonlinear self-demodulation of two confocal vortices, we report the generation of acoustic vortices of subwavelength dimensions. A helicoidal acoustic source with two different slopes is used to generate two primary focused vortices beams of different frequencies and topological charges. The souces are excited with high amplitude in order to excite the nonlinearity through propagation in air of the two main vortices. Then, they nonlinearly interact and generate the self-demodulated vortex at a frequency and topological charge corresponding to the difference of these quantities of the two main ones. Therefore, the self-demodulated vortex presents the spatial distribution of the main vortices with a sub-wavelength size when compared to the wavelength of the self-demodulated one. In this work we experimentally and numerically observe that nonlinearity enables the generation of focused vortex beams of tunable topological charge in the far-field whose characteristic size is 22 times smaller than the wavelength of the self-demodulated beam.
